This is Robert Aitken’s logo. It draws attention to his Atlantic connection by showing a ship on the ocean. Aitken got many of the books that he sold in his shop from overseas. Robert Aitken, of Philadelphia, was a printer, binder, publisher and bookseller. He made both the first English New Testament made in America and the 1st English Bible made in America. That 1782 Bible went on to be called the “Bible of the Revolution”.
Aitken had been printing a New Testament in English (the first in 1777) each year leading up to his complete Bible that was finally published in 1782. Aitken ended up printing around 10,000 of these Bibles.
